However, environmental regulations around the world aim to limit the use of lead by the industry, thus threatening the application of lead-based ceramics. Recently, a new class of high-performance electrostrictors based on ceria ceramics was discovered. It was found that due to the unique ceria defect chemistry and crystal symmetry, an abnormally high electrostrictive response can be developed in oxygen-deficient ceria, thus such effect was named giant electrostriction
